Horizontal vs Vertical Foundation Cracks
What is the difference between a horizontal and a vertical foundation crack?
They are caused by different forces and mean different things. Vertical cracks are usually shrinkage: concrete losing volume as it cures and relieving the stress by splitting. Horizontal cracks are bending: the wall resisting sideways pressure from soil outside and failing where the bending moment is greatest. Vertical is common and often harmless; horizontal indicates an external load and warrants assessment.

The mechanical difference
A basement wall is a vertical slab holding back soil. It carries the weight of the house downward, and it resists the soil pushing sideways. Those two loads produce completely different failure patterns.
Vertical cracking generally has nothing to do with either load. Concrete shrinks by a small percentage as it cures over roughly its first year, and because the wall is restrained at the footing it cannot shrink freely, so it relieves the tension by cracking. The cracks run vertically because the tension is horizontal.
Horizontal cracking is about the sideways load. As soil pressure bends the wall inward, the inside face at mid-height goes into tension, and concrete is weak in tension. It cracks along a horizontal line because the tension is vertical. This is a wall being overloaded, which is a different category of event from a wall curing.

Where diagonal cracks fit
Diagonal cracks are a third category and are frequently misfiled under one of the other two. A crack that leans significantly and is wider at one end usually indicates differential settlement, where part of the foundation has dropped relative to the rest and the wall is being sheared rather than bent or shrunk.
The tell is the taper. Shrinkage cracks tend to be roughly consistent in width; settlement cracks usually widen toward one end, and that end points toward the part of the house that has moved.
Why the repairs differ
A vertical shrinkage crack needs sealing if it leaks and nothing at all if it does not. There is no ongoing force to counteract, so filling the crack is a complete solution.
A horizontal crack cannot be solved by filling, because the load that created it is still applied. Injection may be part of the work to stop water, but the wall also needs restraint, and the soil pressure needs reducing through drainage correction. A sealed horizontal crack in a wall still under pressure will generally reopen or be joined by another one nearby.
This is the practical reason direction matters so much: it determines whether you are buying a repair or buying a solution to an ongoing condition.
Stair-step cracks in block walls
Concrete block and masonry foundations crack along the mortar joints because that is the weakest path, which produces a stepped diagonal line rather than a clean straight crack. Read the overall direction of the step rather than the individual segments.
A stair-step pattern running roughly horizontally along a course carries the same meaning as a horizontal crack in a poured wall. One running diagonally down toward a corner suggests settlement. Displacement matters more in block walls than in poured ones, because block can shift along a joint relatively easily.
