Bowing Basement Walls
My basement wall looks like it is curving inward. Is it?
Sight along the wall from a corner at floor level: a bow that is real will show as a curve against that sightline, and you can measure it by holding a string taut from corner to corner and measuring the largest gap. Any measurable bow means soil is pushing harder than the wall resists. Under roughly 25mm is generally restrainable; beyond that the options narrow and get more expensive. The number that matters most is not how far it has moved but whether it is still moving.

What you are probably seeing
- A wall that curves inward, most visible when you crouch at a corner and sight along it
- A horizontal crack across the wall, commonly near mid-height
- The top of the wall pushed in relative to the floor joists, or the base kicked in at the slab
- Stair-step cracking through mortar joints in a block wall
- Gaps opening where the wall meets the floor above, or the sill plate no longer bearing evenly
- Dust or debris at the base of the wall suggesting recent movement
What causes it
- Lateral earth pressure
- The baseline load every basement wall carries. Soil has weight and pushes sideways; walls are designed for a certain amount of it.
- Hydrostatic pressure from saturated soil
- Wet soil pushes considerably harder than dry. This is why a wall that stood for forty years can start moving after drainage fails or grading changes.
- Expansive clay
- Clay generates pressure as it swells with water rather than only transmitting the soil's weight. Calgary's clay till makes this a local factor rather than a general one.
- Frost pressure high on the wall
- Soil freezing against the upper wall expands and concentrates load there, which is a common reason the top of a wall moves in while the base does not.
- Surcharge loads
- Driveways, parked vehicles, patios, fill and retaining walls beside the house all add to the load in the soil bearing on the wall.

How it is usually dealt with
Measure and monitor
Establish the deflection with a string line and record it with dates. Whether the wall is still moving is the single most important input to every decision that follows, and it costs nothing to find out.
Carbon fibre straps
Bonded to the inside face to resist further bending. Low-profile, no excavation, can be finished over. Holds the wall; does not straighten it.
Steel I-beam bracing
Vertical steel braced to the slab and the framing above. More restraint than bonded systems, at the cost of visual intrusion and floor space.
Wall anchors or tiebacks
Anchored out into stable soil in the yard and tightened over successive seasons, which can recover part of the deflection rather than only arresting it.
Excavate and rebuild
Where the wall has moved too far to restrain. The soil load is relieved by digging, and the wall is straightened or rebuilt with drainage and waterproofing renewed at the same time.
The Calgary angle
Bowing is where Calgary's two soil conditions compound. Clay-rich till generates pressure as it swells, and the deep frost line means a large area of the wall is in contact with soil that freezes and expands each winter. Movement that appears or worsens in spring, as meltwater saturates the backfill, points at hydrostatic pressure specifically, which means drainage correction will be part of any repair that lasts.

How much bowing is too much in a basement wall?
Roughly 25mm of deflection is the point commonly used to distinguish walls that can usually be restrained in place from walls that need more intervention. It is a guideline rather than a rule: a 15mm bow that is actively increasing is a more serious situation than a 30mm bow that measurement shows has been static for twenty years.
How do I measure whether my wall is bowing?
Hold a string line taut against the wall from one corner to the other at the height where the curve looks worst, then measure the largest gap between the string and the wall. Record the figure with the date. Repeating that measurement a few months later is what tells you whether the wall is still moving, which matters more than the number itself.
Can a bowing wall be straightened?
Partly, sometimes. Carbon fibre and steel bracing stop further movement but leave the wall where it is. Wall anchors can be tightened over successive seasons and may recover some deflection. Meaningful straightening usually requires excavating outside to relieve the soil pressure first, which is why it costs substantially more.
Will a bowing wall collapse?
Sudden collapse is rare, and walls typically give a long warning through cracking and progressive deflection. The practical risk is that the pressure causing the movement does not go away, so waiting means dealing with a wall that has moved further, which narrows the repair options and raises the cost.
